چکیده
Modern data analysis applications for 2D/3D data samples require complex visual output features which are often based on OpenGL, a multi-platform API for rendering vector graphics. They demand special computing workstations with a corresponding CPU and GPU power, enough main memory and fast network interconnects for a performant remote data access. For this reason, users depend heavily on available free workstations, both temporally and locally. The provision of virtual machines (VMs) accessible via a remote connection could avoid this inflexibility. However, the automatic deployment, operation and remote access of OpenGL-capable VMs with professional visualization applications is a non-trivial task. In this paper, we discuss a concept for a flexible analysis infrastructure that will be part in the project ASTOR, which is the abbreviation for “Arthropod Structure revealed by ultrafast Tomography and Online Reconstruction”. We present an Analysis-as-a-Service (AaaS) approach based on the ondemand allocation of VMs with dedicated GPU cores and a corresponding analysis environment to provide a cloud-like analysis service for scientific users.

Optimal Feature Selection from VMware ESXi 5.1 Feature Set
A study of VMware ESXi 5.1 server has been carried out to find the optimal set of parameters which suggest usage of different resources of the server. Feature selection algorithms have been used to extract the optimum set of parameters of the data obtained from VMware ESXi 5.1 server using esxtop command. Multiple virtual machines (VMs) are running in the mentioned server. K-means algorithm is ...
متن کاملOptimizing VM Checkpointing for Restore Performance in VMware ESXi
Irene Zhang started her presentation by explaining that checkpointing is similar to “suspend,” but while taking a checkpoint, the virtual machine can continue its execution. Because checkpointing is used for fault tolerance, taking a checkpoint can be done quickly, in less than a few seconds; restoring from the checkpoint, although slow, hasn’t been a problem; however, recent applications, such...
متن کاملPerformance Comparison of Hardware Virtualization Platforms
Hosting virtual servers on a shared physical hardware by means of hardware virtualization is common use at data centers, web hosters, and research facilities. All platforms include isolation techniques that restrict resource consumption of the virtual guest machines. However, these isolation techniques have an impact on the performance of the guest systems. In this paper, we study how popular h...

In today‟s fast advancing technology, virtualization has presented the possibility of consolidating unused/underutilized resources into one physical component. This comes with benefits such as saving costs, hardware independence and improving security by isolation; it is no wonder virtualization is gradually being implemented in every aspect of the technology world. A virtualized system is able...
